In 1971, readers around the world were astonished by some photographs which appeared in newspapers. Hidden deep in the rainforests of an island in the Philippines, was an ethnic (種族的) 36 called the Tasaday. Not until that moment did anyone have any 37 of these people. A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves ? the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.

Over the last 70 years．researchers have been studying happy and unhappy people and finally found out ten factors that make a difference．Our feelings of well-being at any moment are determined to a certain degree by genes．However, of all the factors，wealth and age are the top two．
Money can buy a degree of happiness．But once you can afford to feed，clothe and house yourself, each extra dollar makes less and less difference．
Researchers find that，on average，wealthier people are happier．But the link between money and happiness is complex．In the past half-century, average income has sharply increased in developed countries，yet happiness levels have remained almost the same．Once your basic needs are met，money only seems to increase happiness if you have more than your friends，neighbors and colleagues．
“Dollars buy Status(社會(huì)地位)，and status makes people feel better,” conclude some experts，which helps explain why people who can seek status in other ways, scientists or actors，for example, may happily accept relatively poorly-paid jobs．
In a research，Professor Alex Michalos found that the people whose desires, not just for money，but for friends，family, job，health, rose furthest beyond what they already had，tended to be less happy than those who felt a smaller gap(差距)．Indeed，the size of the gap predicted happiness about five times better than income alone．“The gap measures just blow away the only measures of income，”says Michalos．
Another factor that has to do with happiness is age．Old age may not be so bad．“Given all the problems of aging，how could the elderly be more satisfied?” asks Professor Laura Carstensen．
Why are old people happier? Some scientists suggest older people may expect life to be harder and learn to live with it，or they're more realistic about their goals，only setting ones that they know they can achieve．But Carstensen thinks that with time running out，older people have learned to focus on things that make them happy and let go of those that don't．
“People realize not only what they have，but also that what they have cannot last forever,” she says．“A goodbye kiss to a husband or wife at the age of 85，for example，may bring far more complex emotional responses than a similar kiss to a boy or girl friend at the age of 20.”

W: Well, you could try Antonio’s. It’s just down the road.
M: I’ve been there before, and the food wasn’t very good. I guess we’ll try Sally’s Home Cooking.

W: Hello? Excuse me.
M: Yeah. What is it?
W: My name’s Angela. I’m a journalist. I write for Little Island magazine and I’m interviewing people about their lifestyle. Do you have a moment?
M: Do I have a moment? Are you kidding? I don’t have time to breathe. Listen, I’m a banker. I work for one of the biggest banks in this city and right now I’m working a hundred hours a week. And I’m not doing it for my health, I can tell you. I’m buying a new apartment. Oh, on top of that, I’m looking after my mother’s car while she’s on vacation. And on top of that, look at me, I’m running because I’m trying to keep fit. Anyway, sorry, honey, I’d love to help, but I’m just much too busy.
W: Oh, OK, well, thank you.

W: Wow! The burglar really made a mess.
M: Uh, Officer, my apartment always looks like this.
W: Well, did you lock your door and windows when you left this morning?
M: I’m sure I locked the door, but the windows…I don’t remember.
W: OK, sir. What time did you come home? ks5u
M: I came home at 6:00 p.m.
W: When did you notice that something was wrong?
M: Well, I went to turn on the TV, but it was gone. And so was my stereo, my DVD player, and all of my CDs! That was a great collection!
W: Now, we’ll have to dust for fingerprints. Did you touch anything else besides the door when you came in?
M: I opened the refrigerator, and my leftover Chinese food was gone, too. I was saving that food for dinner tonight!
W: I’ll call the detectives and they will check for fingerprints. Then you’ll have to fill out a report.
M: Thank you, Officer.ks5u

M: I had a strange experience yesterday. I went climbing up the mountains and it started to get dark so I thought I’d better get back down as fast as possible. Well, I started walking back down the mountain trail as fast as I could, but it kept getting darker and darker. Pretty soon, I was totally lost. Suddenly I saw a strange light up in the tree. I was really surprised. And then, I saw a little old man carrying the light — he was right in front of me. He didn’t say anything to me. In fact, I couldn’t even see his face, like he had no eyes, or nose, or… It was really strange. He just stood there in front of me. Then he started walking down the trail, and I just followed him. When we got to the bottom of the mountain and I tried to thank the old man for helping me, he just disappeared.
