Most students try to learn English grammar using grammar textbooks. They study grammar rules and take grammar tests. They use an analytical approach, attempting to memorize, and then apply, a great number of rules.
However, research has proved this method inefficient and ineffective. The truth is, the human brain simply cannot consciously remember, process, and use hundreds of or thousands of grammar rules. Real speech is too fast.
Native speakers do not learn grammar in this way, but rather intuitively (憑直覺(jué)地) and unconsciously. They learn in a complete way, not by attempting to memorize individual grammar rules. As a result, native speakers use correct grammar fluently and easily.
Fortunately, it is possible for English learners to learn grammar this way. Language teacher Blaine Ray has developed a unique "intuitive" approach to teach English grammar. Her system uses "point of view" stories to teach the patterns of English grammar, allowing students unconsciously to acquire correct grammar without ever studying grammar rules.
In this system, the teacher first tells a simple story from one point of view. It may be told about the past, then repeated, but beginning with "since he was a child"; then repeated again, but this time about the future.
Listening to these stories allows students intuitively and effortlessly to learn English grammar and makes them be able to use it correctly when they speak.

Mary Henrietta Kingsley (1862-1900) was a British explorer and writer who greatly influenced European ideas about Africa and its people. She was born in Islington, London, and her father was a doctor.
The family moved to Cambridge in 1886, during which time her father prepared his plentiful collection of notes and translations for publication. However, it came to a sudden end with his death in February 1892. Her mother followed just six weeks later. After her parents’ death, Kingsley decided to travel to Africa to continue her father’s study of early religion and law and learn as much as possible about the nature of travel and exploration in the wild of Africa.
Since 1894, Kingsley had taken two trips to the west coast of Africa. She reached parts of the "Great Forest" not yet seen by a European. She collected insect, shell, plant, reptile for the British Museum, as well as studying the culture and religion of the residents. Dining al fresco (戶(hù)外就餐), better known as "eating out in the fresh air," has been a standard operating procedure on much of the planet since the days when al fresco was the only atmosphere available. Heavier people contribute more harmful gases to the planet than thin people because of food production and transportation factors, a study shows.
Providing that it takes more energy to carry heavier people, transportation of heavier people requires more fuel, which creates more greenhouse gas emissions(排放). Phil Edwards, a senior lecturer of the school, said, "The main message is staying thin. It’s good for not only you but the planet."
More than 1 billion adults worldwide are overweight, and about 300 million are obese, the study said. People are less active now than they were 30 years ago, and the popularity of fast food has given people more less healthy choices.
"In terms of environmental impact, the thin population has a much smaller carbon footprint," Edwards said. A population with 40 percent overweight people requires 19 percent more food energy than a population with 3.5 percent fat people. This 19 percent increase in food use translates into an increase of 270 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
The findings make sense and point out the important global benefits of losing weight, along with the personal health benefits. The study suggests that governments have a responsibility to encourage people to be more physically active. Active transportation, such as cycling and walking, helps maintain a healthy weight but requires safe streets. If the government wants to encourage active transport, it needs to make the environment safe to do so.
Although climate change has become a major world problem recently, this is not the first time scholars have thought about the connection between fossil fuel and body weight. Measures to control obesity include making healthier meals, putting nutritional information on food packages and menus and so on.

This is my little spot to introduce myself. I am a wife and mother and grandmother. Over the last few years I have developed the site Women folk: Of Creativity, Inspiration and Quilting as well as this site.
I came to quilting(縫被子)late. Although I sewed clothing for my young family, once I started teaching full time my sewing years came to an end. How I envied my quilting friends and longed for the days when I could quilt too. In the fall of 1996 I retired from teaching and took a quilt workshop on making a little wall hanging(墻帷). My dream of quilting came true at last！That winter I took an eight-week class on making a sampler quilt. It was quite demanding but what a joy it was for me to go home each week with 2 or 3 new blocks to make. I loved the planning of a quilt; it sparked my creativity. When I sat working at my machine I found it a relaxing time for thinking. So far I have made over two dozen quilts and wall hangings and I’m still quilting. My love of making quilts gave birth to another project. I became curious about the history of quilting and started to search the Internet for information. At that time online information was quite limited so I began collecting books on quilt history. Soon I realized there was a lot more about the history of quilting than patterns and techniques. My studies opened up a fascinating world of how these quilters lived. I discovered that life was fragile(脆弱的)when children could easily die of diseases, husbands were killed in war and women didn’t always survive childbirth. I learned of these women’s hope and dreams, their friendships, and their sense of achievements with the quilts they made.

Celebrating sleep
World Sleep Day, observed on 21 March, was created to bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems worldwide. Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world ignore its importance. As a result, sleep problems are increasingly common.
In 2002, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece conducted a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa. Of the people that responded to the survey, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, and based on their responses, 31.6 percent were diagnosed (診斷)with insomnia（失眠）and another 17.5 percent were diagnosed with borderline insomnia. Overall, the survey found that ninny people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some examples of which are being unable to fall asleep and waking up in the middle of the night. The main factors causing these problems are pressure from school or work and a fast pace of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also interfere with sleep and contribute to poor quality sleep. The survey’s findings are particularly troubling because large numbers of people were found to have difficulty sleeping at night. The short-term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating. If this happens for a long time, the risk of putting on weight and having a heart attack may increase.
There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.
Getting a good night's sleep is important for everyone. By following the advice above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.

Dear Sir,
Yesterday afternoon, we had a discussion on the question: “Would you go shopping with your friend at his request while you are going over your lessons?”
My classmates Li Lei and Tom had different viewpoints. Li Lei thought that he couldn’t refuse his friend’s request even though his studies would be affected. But Tom didn’t think so. He said he wouldn’t meet all requests from his friends. Studying was more impotant than shopping.
In my opinion, either Li Lei or Tom is right to some extent. We may meet our friends’ request, but that depends. If we have difficulties, we should let them know.
