The Big Ben is located in the tower at the eastern end of the Houses of Parliament, Westminster, Greater London. It is the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. It was designed by Edmund Beckett and Baron Grimthorpe.
The Big Ben is very famous throughout the world, but nobody really knows why it is called Big Ben. There are two hearsays about this. Some people say that it was named after Benjamin Caunt, a boxer, who was called Big Ben. More people believe it was called after Welshman, Sir Benjamin Hall. He was the commissioner (特派員) of the work at the time of its construction in 1859. A story was told that during a debate in the Commons on what to call the bell, Sir Benjamin was about to give his ideas when an MP who sat behind the front bench shouted, “Let’s call it Big Ben!” Then this name came into being.
The bell hasn’t gone through a smooth road since the beginning of its design. Because there was great disagreement about the design of the clock, it took fifteen years to build. In 1857, the bell was completed and tested on the ground, but a four-foot crack appeared and the bell had to be cast again. Finally, the clock started ticking on 31 May, 1859, and struck its first chime on 11, July. Then in September, the bell cracked again. It was silent for four years but was at last turned a quarter of a revolution (旋轉(zhuǎn)). In this way, the crack was not under the striking hammer. Craftsmen made a square above the crack to stop it becoming longer and it can still be seen today.
The Big Ben is famous not only for its 13-ton weight, but also for its accuracy which is a result of its precise mechanism (機(jī)械裝置). Even one extra penny’s weight on the balance will cause a gain of two fifths of a second in twenty four hours. Although there have been several problems, the bell is still striking today. The ancient Maya built many large cities in the Classic Period, which lasted from about 250 until about 900. Each city had its own king and ruling class. The cities traded with one another but often fought with one another as well. In about 900, the Maya gave up many of their cities.
Archaeologists and other scientists have long puzzled over why the Maya left. They have formed theories by examining those cities carefully and studying the settlements that surround them. In Copan they found many tools dating from 500 to about 1,000 and a few tools dating from about 1,000 to 1,200. They found that no new monuments (遺跡) had been built after 822. From studying plant remains, scientists concluded that the area around Copan had been farmland. Other evidence suggested that the land was overfarmed. In view of the evidence, scientists concluded that a large population lived in Copan until about 1,000. As humans, we sometimes find it hard to forgive those who hurt us. We are either too proud or stubborn (頑固的) and would rather ignore the situation and hold a grudge (怨恨). Unknown to us, this just causes much pain in our hearts or even creates health problems.
I believe we are spiritual beings experiencing human life to learn lessons, to grow and become more aware of our connection to our soul and God. To forgive those who hurt you can only bring peace in your heart, letting go of the past, and letting the one who asked for forgiveness experience their own spiritual growth.
I grew up with an alcoholic step-dad. There were a lot of moments when he would beat us boys and my mom. Many times we ran away from home out of fear and slept over at hospitals, police stations, or even at the next-door neighbor’ house. It all started when I was about 2 years old, right through to my early twenties. I’m the eldest among four boys. I thank God that though each of us was scarred, we still kept our heads straight. None of us abuse alcohol.
At some point in my late twenties I forgave my step-dad in my heart, not directly. None of my brothers forgave him. They hate him, yet still talk to him. I feel the most sorry for my mom because after all these years, they are still together.
My step-dad has calmed down a lot. However, there were moments he started again.
About a month ago, I came to visit my parents. They were having financial difficulties and I knew he was going to start again. Normally my dad is home in time for supper after closing his business. He came home late at 11 pm that night, drunk as a skunk. I was the only one still awake and didn’t go to bed for some reason, feeling I had to wait and for once in my life, be protective towards my mom.
Talking to me, he was swearing at my mom and my brothers, telling me he would beat everybody up. He had a soft spot for me. Though I was the one who suffered the most beatings, and still carried a lot of fear and emotional baggage, he didn’t say one bad word towards me that night. I just listened and watched him expressing his anger.
Then it happened. A moment I thought would never happen. He started crying, admitting his faults, and asking for my forgiveness. I analyzed a lot and knew a long time ago that he probably had tough childhood too and didn’t know better. I was relieved that I managed not only to calm him down, but to get him to open his heart and ask for forgiveness. I did forgive him a long time ago; just made it more magical to do it face to face.

If you live in a city where everyone rushes, you don’t have to be like that. Your environment doesn’t control your life and you can do many things to be different—not to hurry like that. Here are some of such things to consider and perhaps adopt, if they work for your life.
